Volunteer!
Mt. Tam Needs You!

One of California's most beloved places would not be the natural jewel it is without the fine efforts of dozens of volunteers. People, perhaps like you. It's a great way to draw closer to this mountain we love.

We are currently seeking volunteers with these special skills or interests:

  • Visitor Center Hosts
The Visitor Center sales account for most of our income, and we'd love to add to the ranks so we can expand our hours. You even get to run the credit card machine!  We also need help staffing the outpost at Pantoll Ranger station - so please let us know if your interests lie here as well
  • Hike scheduler

If you are looking for a way to get some hours for your Active membership with MTIA and would like to get them from the comfort of your own home, hike scheduler may be the job for you. It amounts to about 10 hours a quarter. Attention to detail is important. Scheduling of Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday hikes is done via email, a few phone calls, and completing an Excel spreadsheet. If you have access to Adobe Standard that is a plus. Training provided. If interested, please email Margy Eller at ellermj@comcast.net (415-383-7303) or Jordan Herrmann at herrmann48@comcast.net (510-528-7894)

  • Hike Recording Backup or Co-Coordinator

Like doing voiceovers?  Backup or Co-Coordinator wanted to work with current Coordinator of the hike recording phone line.  Record hike schedule for upcoming week; monitor voicemails and send out schedules either by email or snail mail, along with membership brochures; email questions to appropriate parties, including members of the Board of Directors if necessary.  Contact Christie Barbour for details at cb4cats@comcast.net (415-381-5179).

  • Hike Leaders
Help volunteer for Mt. Tam and Mt. Tamalpais State Park by doing the things you love most:  hiking in the beautiful outdoors, and sharing those joys with others.  If you have special interests as well - such as working with inner city and underprivileged youth, or with senior citizens or the elderly - you may also be interested in some of the pilot programs we're creating! Call 415-258-2410 and leave information on how to reach you such as your phone number, address, spelling of your name, and perhaps your email addressThis makes it easier for us to contact you.

  • Attorney
We'd like to get some solid pro-bono legal advice on a number of issues. Do you know an attorney who has in interest in Mt. Tam? Or are you one?

  • Membership Data Manager
Track our volunteers and members by computer.

  • Mt. Log Editor
Do you love 'smithing words, have experience with computers and the printing process?  This quarterly job will give you about 20 hours of credit per issue. It's a fun job that 2 people who have a way with words could easily share.

  • Astronomy Program Assistant
With 300-500 people on the mountain during the terrific monthly astronomy programs, Tinka could use a few extra hands to help plan, set up and greet people. You never know - you might learn something! And how could you pass up an evening under the stars?

  • Special Event Assistant
If you like prowling the social scene, this is where you want to be! We need a couple of interested volunteers for this active committee.

  • Trail Crew Volunteers
Give back to the mountain by cutting/clearing trails and helping to remove non-native plant species!  Contact Ranger Tom Frazier at 415-388-3653.

Volunteers who give more than 40 hours a year receive free parking at Mt. Tam.

Volunteers who give more than 100 hours a year receive free parking at every Marin District park unit (China Camp, Tomales Bay, Mt. Tam, Olompali and SP Taylor.)

Volunteers who give more than 200 hours a year receive free parking statewide.

For general information on becoming a volunteer on Mt. Tamalpais or for answers to questions on volunteering, please contact the Pantoll Ranger Station at 415-388-2070 or 415-258-2410.  Be sure to leave your name (spelled out of course), your phone number, address and maybe an email address.  This makes it easier for us to contact you.
